about

Composer, improviser and multi instrumentalist Abdul-Hakim Bilal presents White Man by their noise moniker Shame. Shame has been committed to presenting a different take on the noise genre over the last several years, employing uncomfortable and confrontational sonic assaults, eschewing the normalized wall of noise favored by their peers and contemporaries. Shame has released a slew of EP’s on various labels but for this album White Man they present their first full length release. White Man is a intricate, grating and uncomfortable concept album letting the listener in on what it feels like to be a black body ensconced in the trappings of a white societal power structure. Not meant to be pleasant, the music pervades the senses and gives the listener a feeling of being torn apart by this inherently racist system. Haunting, confrontational and timely, the struggle black people face daily is present in this harrowing and very experimental album. The packaging includes a 20 page booklet with photography by Dylan Rozzelle presented on glossy paper.Another co release with Pennsylvania’s Orb Tapes, White Man is available from Cacophonous Revival on CD, while Orb Tapes is handling the cassette version.

Reviews:
"Through the use of harsh noise soundscapes, Abdul-Hakim Bilal paints a picture of daily existence in a Black body forced to navigate a hostile White world. It’s traumatic. It’s nauseating. It’s beauty and joy and love paved over but still managing to crack the cement and spring up, only to be pulled up by the roots and paved over again."

"Bilal's Shame project is about taking back the affecting power of noise, deconstructing it's destructiveness and repurposing it into a reverie. It's an anguished testimony. An incantation turned against the exploiting whiteness. A witnessing shriek of those affected by racial injustice. Fragility alternates with empowerment."
